In China, landscape preparation originated with Feng Shui, which is interpreted into English as 'wind and water' and is applied to depict a set of general principles for the contriving of evolution in reference to the natural landscape (Jeff Zima).
The bearing was to detect the most auspicious environment imaginable, one sited in harmony with raw phenomena and the physical and mental needs of man (Goodway Landscape).
Landscape architects in the U.S.A. are active in landscape preparation. But, different than Canada and Europe, the US doesn't bear a national land use contriving system. Frederick Law Olmsted and Ian McHarg are the most celebrated American landscape planners. McHarg's work on cover landscape planning added to the development of GIS and to the foundation of ESRI (Goodway Landscape).
