In rural areas, the harm induced by unintentional mineral extraction was among the early causes for a public requirement for landscape designing (Goodway Landscape).
In India, the account of landscape designing can be copied to the Vedas and to the Vaastu Shastras. These old texts set off principles for contriving settlements, temples and additional structures in reference to the natural landscape (Jeff Zima).
Relationships with mountains (the abode of the gods) and with rivers (looked upon as goddesses) were of exceptional grandness. A square phase laid out the earth and a circular form constituted heaven. A mandala explicated the relationship between eden and earth. Square plans, for both secular and spiritual structures, were set retired with their sides facing north, south, east and west. The soonest surviving stone temple set out in this way is Sanchi (Goodway Landscape).
